Interim Payroll Manager
Morgan Hunt are working with a College based in the North London who are looking at recruiting an Interim Payroll Manager. This is a 3-6 month contract role paying up to £230 p/day umbrella. This role is full-time, 36 hours p/week, 3 days required in the office.
Key Responsibilities of the Interim Payroll Manager:
- Lead and manage the College’s payroll and pensions administration to ensure staff are paid accurately and on time.
- Deliver statutory returns and ensure full compliance with HMRC, pension providers, and other external authorities.
- Oversee the administration of payroll, expenses, and pension contributions through the College’s HR and Payroll system.
- Conduct manual calculations (e.g., SMP, SSP, tax credits, over/underpayments) where required.
- Manage pay awards, one-off payments, absence deductions, and salary sacrifice/loan schemes.
- Act as system administrator for payroll systems, liaising with software suppliers for upgrades and troubleshooting.
- Develop and maintain payroll and pension policies and quality control procedures ensuring audit and statutory compliance.
- Build effective working relationships with internal HR and Finance teams and external pension providers.
- Lead the monthly reconciliation of payroll-related control accounts and prepare the nominal ledger interface.
- Train and develop Finance team members in payroll and pension system functionalities.
Previous Skills and Experience of the Interim Payroll MAnager:
- Ideally payroll qualification (e.g., Institute of Payroll Professionals or equivalent).
- Successful senior-level experience managing payroll and pensions within a complex organisation, ideally in the education sector (LGPS and TPS exposure desirable).
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation (PAYE, NI, SSP, SMP).
- Proven track record of staff management, motivating and developing team performance.
- Skilled in using and improving computerised payroll systems and manual processes.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to high-quality customer service.
- Strong project management, analytical, and systems development skills.
- The successful candidate must hold an Enhanced DBS or be willing to undergo processing.
